2001 pontiac sunfire just died going to work will turn over but wont start

Was driving car to work and completely died a block from work. Has 1/8th tank of gas in it. It will turn over fine but won't even try to start. I let it set for about an hour and tried to start it again and tried for a second and did nothing but turn over after that. I am assuming it could be one of many reasons......fuel filter, fuel pump..........any ideas other than those two I mentioned. I plan on changing out the fuel filter first and read a post earlier about turning the key on the ignition to listen and see if I can hear the fuel pump turn on. Maybe the gas gauge is broke and I just need fuel........car has 85,000 miles on it and ran fine up till then but we bought it used and don't know when the last time the fuel filter was changed so I plan on changing it first.........any other suggestion would be greatly appreciated.........THANKS!!

Did it sputter to a stop? if so it may be out of gas. You must first check to see if it is gett fuel and spark. Then you will know where to look for the problem.
