Climate control problem

Hey all,
I've got a 98 venture. Recently, the fan stopped working in all postitions, except '5' (high). Also, I can't get the air flow to switch at all-right now it comes out the bottom vents, middle vents, and the windshield defrost vent. Any Ideas?

Matt

Did you ever get your response. I have a similar situation on direction of air flow

Re: Climate control problem

Matt,

Blower problem is probably the "blower resistor". Everything EXCEPT high (5) has to go through there.

As for the air flow, there are diverters that sometimes "get stuck" as the car ages or "stuff" gets stuck in the heater/AC assembly. My 2001 has a similar issue right now (which I have NOT attacked yet). There is a control arm on the driver's side of the center console that gets stuck and will not return to the proper position once "dash only" vents are selected. I had to remove the sound panel on that side and give it an extra push to get any air to come out of the "defrost" (windshield) vents.

Good luck,

Greg A.

Thanks Greg! Now, if I can only find this resistor. Any idea on where it is?

the resistor is behind the blower on the passenger side. Take out the blower, 3 or 4 bolts I believe, then unhook 2 wires. That's it. I did mine last week in about an hour, and I'm not very mechanically inclined. Cost $50.

I was having a similar problem with one of the Ventures I own. The blower would not work on 1,2,or 3 but would work on 4 and 5. A mechanic told me that was a sign that the blower resistor was bad. He said it controls both the low ( 1,2,3 ) and high (4,5) speeds, and when the low does not work , then the resistor is bad. When Mpalze said that it only worked on 5, I thought that it couldn't have been the resistor,as 4 should work as well. I would have posted something earlier about the resistor, but I didn't think that could be the source of the problem. I wonder if 5 is the default so at least one speed works in case the resistor goes bad?

The schematic I have shows only lower 4 setting go through the resistor pack. Setting 5 (high) bypasses resistor and applies 12V to the motor (through a relay - also on the resistor/relay "assembly"). I believe this is for my 2001, but it should be similar for other years.

I tried to put the schematic up, but don't know how to insert graphic filles here. Sorry.

Take care,

Greg A.
