dust inside the distributor

There is always presence of sticky reddish brown accumulation inside the distributor housing that interferes with the driving performance; and at times, the engine won't start at all. After dust is wiped off, there it starts or runs great again for a couple of days only. It is deeply appreciated if anybody can shed light on this . Mine is 3VZE '91 V6 4runner with 220k miles in it.

Re: dust inside the distributor

Sounds like you have rust building up on moving parts inside there and needs to be cleaned up a bit and a careful thin amount of grease used on moving pivot points...I like using a small amount of RTV(silicone from squeeze tube) to seal parting line of dist. and dist. cap to help keep out moisture as well....might replace cap and rotor and do this if contact posts inside cap look ate up as well...goodluck
