94 Ranger HELP!!!!

My son-in-law took his ranger out mudding the other night (not a 4X4) and it died on him, so I plucked him out of the hole he was in and started working on the problem.....
First of all he ran the battery down, laid out the cables to jump and the motor would turn over but would not start.
Second, I shot some started fluid in the intake and tried to start again. It would run on the fluid and then die. (I take that as I have spark)
Third, I checked this bog and guessed from all the previous post that the fuel pump must be out. So I went to Auto Zone and got a new one and installed it. Still would not start.
Fourth, I pulled the filter thinking it might have a clog, it was fine no junk in the filter and was able to blow air through it.
Thinking that I might have a bad pump, I ran a hot wire to the pump and it ran til it built up pressure and tried to crank it and it would not start. I went to the fuel rail and checked to see if fuel was making it to the rail by checking the valve on the rail. Got plenty of fuel there.
I put my meter on the connector to the pump and it was reading about 8 volts. Is that what it should read?

Next I started checking fuses and relays and voltages around them and everything checked out good.
I checked the emergency fuel cut off relay on the passenger side footboard and it is ok. Even pulled it out and tripped and reset the switch with a meter on it...no problems.
I pulled the pump relay and turned the ignition on and slowly put the relay back on to hear the reley latch.


So, the big question, what would prevent fuel from going through the ingectors and what can I do to check to see if that is the problems?

hey, check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gage and it should read 40 psi. if it's lower than that, then the engine won't start, and make sure you have 12 volts to the fuel pump.

I have about 8 volts at the pump with the ignition "ON", so I hot wired it (a new pump) and it ran til it built up pressure. The engine turns over but still will not start with it wired hot.

...and yes I already checked the emergency fuel cutoff circuit breaker at the passenger's floorboard.

I had a car that had the exact same problem and symptoms (everything checked out ok). Ended up being a "crank" sensor, that is located in the transmission bell housing. One screw to remove it and replace it, then started right up, check to see if your vehicle has one.
