which car is....
Which merc car is easier to start with to go quick?
Cyclone 69' Cougar 69' Comet 71' Montego 69' What ever I plan on getting I do plan in takeing in a merc 427 with 65' heads. It makes between 410-425hp according to the american car dictionary. All of these cars started at 3200lb to 2700lb (the comet) so they are relatively light. Plus they are built better than fords not so rickety that is. Not to say fords are rickety but they were the cheaper brand. So really I'm looking at which one can take the 427 easyer, parts are cheap, intial car is cheap (up to $4500) and is easily modiffied in the suspension spectrum. So what are your opinions? Suggestions? Is there any specific problem spots I should know? Is there things I should look for when buying that car? what price range am I looking at for a car with little or no rust( no need to be perfect albeit). |

Re: which car is....
I may be a bit biased but go with a Cougar. I think of those 4 cars it has the best styling and is the lightest of the 4. You could order it in 1968 with a 427 option. The cyclone/comet line were bigger cars and might not require as much modification as a cougar for a 427. But then theres the whole weight issue. I dont know much about the Montego but werent those pretty big cars as well? I have a couple Cougars for sale in Michigan if thats the way you want to go. Good Luck. Steve

Re: which car is....
The 71 Comet/Maverick would be the lighter car. My bad on that one. In 71 the Maverick was marketed under the Comet nameplate. Due to its small size wouldnt there be problems wedging in a 427? Just my two cents worth. Steve

Re: which car is....
Check some hot rodding or drag racing magazines from 1964. Jack Chrisman had a Comet hardtop with a 427 in it. Kind of like an upscale Fairlane Thunderbolt except he also had a GMC blower on that engine. This was one of the precursors of the Funny Car.
With frame connectors, a cage or other body reinforcements and a 9 inch rear, this could be an awesome accelerating machine. Don't forget the traditional Ford fiberglass bubble hood! |
