Question 1992 New Yorker (Fifth Avenue) Stereo Trouble...

1992 New Yorker (Fifth Avenue). The radio and cassette player has stopped working. The clock still keeps perfect time and if you turn on the radio the channels will change on the the display screen, just no sound what so ever...

The cassette player has decided to stop taking in cassettes too, they pop right back out again....

It all worked perfect just a while ago.

Any ideas?...Also if anyone knows anything about removing these stereos a few directions would be great too.

Thanks

sounds like the speaker output section died, not sure if it used an external amp or not, follow the wires from the speaker ...... as far as removal, the trim around the radio/heater controls comes off, look for screws that can be seen by laying on the seat and looking up, if not there then it is held in by spring clips, just pry, once that is off you will see the mounting screws

Is the speaker output something that is part of the actual stereo unit?...If I pop in a new stereo would that fix it if that is indeed the trouble?

Thanks

an external amp would be a seperate unit from the deck or radio itself... either nearby behind or below the deck, under a seat, in the trunk... often used with a sub but also used for speakers... you can get small output booster amps for speakers that are just a bit bigger than a pack of smokes...

Oddly enough the damn thing has mysteriously started to work again, guess it was just a loose connection or something like that...

Thanks

One thing that can cause exactly what you described is an easy fix, but also something that can just come and go if you don't fix it... If any one speaker in the car is loose, or has loose wires of any kind and the speaker itself becomes grounded it will cut out all sound to all of the speakers. If this happens again, you may need to take off your door panels or check in the trunk (presuming that's where the speakers are, that's where they are in my New Yorker) and check to make sure there is nothing touching the speaker that shouldn't be....
