Lightbulb Baja Bug/Beetle Help needed

This is a project I have been wanting to do for many years
The first car I almost bought was a Baja Beelte, but due to,too much rust I didn't.

Good referance photos on the web are had to find, I tried Google etc.
If anyone can help, it would be great.

Now the main sticking point is GOOD 4x4 wheels and tyres
I'm thinking about these American Satco ones for the fronts

and these for the rears

But wheels , can seem to find anything suitable.

So any help with photos/links would be great
Thanks guys

Hi,

years ago I started a VW Baja project, too. It is not finished, yet. My base-kit is the Tamiya Beetle. My reference material are some copies of American magazines called
"Dune Buggies and Hot VWs" from 1988 to 1992.
Maybe you search in the net for this magazin.

The rear tires you show seem to be a little bit square, not for offroad-use.

Hope it helps

Micha

Re: Baja Bug/Beetle Help needed

Not sure if this could help, but the rims are looking strangely like those you can find on "big rigs" ! Maybe an old Canepa Kenworth or somenthing like that but maybe the 1/24 big rig will be too big without modifications for a Vdub. Maybe you should look Humvee or Willys wheels from the 1/35 Italeri or Tamiya kit... or maybe a tank carrier... BTW:The picture you find of the VW is great.

A few links first:

Raid Andorre - Collioure
17th Super VW National
Raid Roumens
Rallye des Cimes
Baja links
Blind chicken racing
Offroad beetle links

Hope you've got enough, I can give a lot more if you need.

About the rims, I would go for the rims you can find on Willimo's Hilux
I think they are also sold separately.
In general, baja wheels are steel rims or Centerlines. Because their usage is 'intensive' they need to be strong. I think you can also find Centerline rims on old Musclecars kits.

It's a project I also have far in my brain, a belgian guy did one with a lot of details. I have to search if I can find pics. This baja was an order for a Vw-lover and he sold it €300. It was worthing a lot more IMO.
Btw, don't hesitate if you have questions about beetles, I think I have lots of answers

Re: Baja Bug/Beetle Help needed

You could try the rims in the "1:32" Tamiya Wild Willys kit. The motorized toy. The rims in that kit are part of the tire (I won't bother to explain it) but you could cut them out.

Re: Baja Bug/Beetle Help needed

I always liked the old school 2 piece VW Steel wheels (normally white with a chrome dog dish hub cap..) And those second set of tires look very 70's.

Re: Baja Bug/Beetle Help needed

Have you tried any 1:25 Rallye wheels for... like... old school muscle cars?

For wheels and tires, try the Bburago Schlesser Megane buggy. It's a die-cast that comes assembled and as a kit.
