Head Unit/console removal issues

I'm putting a new head unit into my 96 P10. I'm having an issue removing the console to do that. The buttons for the hazard and rear defroster don't want to come off. Are there any tricks to this maneuver? Are there any clips that I should look for. I don't want to force these plastic parts only to have them break. I think they're only available at the dealership.

Thanks

Hey, its been a while, so forgive me if I'm rusty

To remove center console to install stereo:

1) Remove ashtray

2) Get low, like to the same level as the shifter, and look up at the console. You should see four screws, two underneath one "ledge" of the console, and two underneath another "ledge" of the console. remove these screws. (once you take a look in there, you should see exactly what I'm taking about.

3) tip the two center vents down (so any air blowing out would blow downard) and grip the console with your fingers on the ledge where the vents are, and your thumbs under the ledge.

4) Pull the whole console toward you (you will have to pull hard). ****DO NOT PULL THE CONSOLE ALL THE WAY OUT, JUST PULL IT SO IT POPS OUT A COUPLE OF INCHES****

5) not that you have the console loosely out, continue pulling it SLOWLY until you can tilt it back and see behind it. you will see the 4 buttons on the top and harness plugged into them, unplug these harnesses and then Voila, the center stack should pull right out! Then 4 screws to take the stereo off, and you're good.

If you have any questions, you can Email me @ [email protected] and I can try to explain better.

Oh, and just reading your post again, a few notes:

The buttons are held on by clips on the back of the button. they can not be removed from the front. the clips must be pressed before they come out, however if you follow my instructions, you shouldn't need to pull the buttons out.
