tracer fuel pump switch trips...why?

My son has a mercury tracer. the fuel pump switch in the back trips occasionally when going uphill or when going over a pothole. anyone know why this switch is there? why does it keep tripping?

you mean the intertia switch? my wagon has a switch in the back that kills the fuel pump. it is designed to stop the fuel pump pumping fuel in the event of a crash. seems like an unusual part, and its easy to get to. bet you could grab one off a junkyard car for cheap and just switch it out in a half hour.
