Fixing a Fuel Pump

I need a new fuel pump for my 2000 cavalier. The mechanic told me it was going to be $800 for the job. I'm afraid he's ripping me off because I'm a single woman. Can anyone tell me if this sounds reasonable? I live in the Philadelphia area.
Thanks!!

Re: Fixing a Fuel Pump

Check with your local dealership to find out how many hours are alloted to do the job.

While you're at it, ask THEM how much they would charge to replace the pump, I doubt it's as much as 800.

Typically, for something like a fuel pump, it should be a maximum of 2-3 hours tops.

From there, factor the labor charge per hour, here in Georgia, it can range from as little as 70-100 dollars per hour, some places charge more, some less.

Then, you have to take into account the cost of the fuel pump itself.
Autozone.com has fuel pumps costing 230-260.

Beyond that, most shops add miscellaneous fees that can range from 5-20 dollars, or, it could be based on a percentage of the rest of the bill.

Even if they can do the job without draining the fuel tank, it still has to be removed from the car to replace the fuel pump. With the right tools and equipment, it's not horribly difficult, but, it can still be a bit time consuming.

I'd also suggest you check with several shops to find their costs. You'd be surprised at the difference.

Hopefully, this helps you.
