fuel pressure check questions.94 4.3

Hi I bought a pressure check guage and I have a couple of questions about the results.I checked the pressure at the shrader port and the pressure was 58 and it held steady at this while running and off.I revved the engine alittle and the pressure dropped at least 10 psi this may be normal I dont know,,Also the truck barely runs now and smells of gas pretty bad..Any ideas would be apprecieated..Let me know if you need more info.. also the gas smell was before the shrader check so its not gas that leaked out after the check thanks Joe

Re: fuel pressure check questions.94 4.3

I would start pulling the upper plenum and looking for a leaking CPI

Yep pull it a 10 psi drop is not good. The fuel is leaking somewhere and I bet just about everyone in this place knows where that is. CPI AND NUT KIT.
Good move on buying the fuel tester

hello I just wanted to make sure on a couple of things. When the truck is not on it holds a steady 58psi when it is at idle it holds a steady 58 its only when I rev the motor that the pressure drops..Is this a problem or should it stay the same even under acceleration.I just wanted to make sure ... thanks Joe

Re: fuel pressure check questions.94 4.3

This is a problem, it needs to be at 56-60 to start and 61-65 at running/idle/acceleration. Any drop in pressure like that indicate lack of fuel flow. Your symptoms indicate a bad cpi/nut kit. Pull your upper plenum, look for signs of washing (where one side is cleaner than the other) If your passenger side is washed it's your CPI unit, if it's the driver's side then it's your nut kit. Though if you replace your CPI unit you should replace the nut kit as a matter of course because the lines get extremely brittle over time.) Once you do this get an immediate oil change. Why? Because more than likely you are dumping excess fuel (hence the gas smell) and a lot of it is ending up in the oil pan. This is not good as the gas washes the bearings and cylinder walls and you can loose your bearings. (Not a good thing)

Re: fuel pressure check questions.94 4.3

should only have a 2-3 psi drop foe a few sec then return to normal pressure. The pumps sounds like its ok and the fuel drop is from a high pressure leak
