heater problem

I have a 1992 pontiac bonneville
The heater motor works but no heat is coming out.
The car is equipped with air conditionning.
I went to a garage and they told me it could be something in the dash and they had to take the dash apart.
They said their might be some blackage there.
Can anyone help me.

Re: heater problem

OK then 3 options:
a) the temperature door actuator is gone haywire , and air is diverted around the heater core unheated. NOtice that this problem is random and the result depends on the place where the trap was at the time the actuator has decided to die. The clue to this option would be that the problem came all of a sudden.
b) clogged heater core: the clue here is that this normally builds up a little bit at a time, so it would procure less and less heat with time. Disconnecting the hoses and flushing the core with water and compressed air usually helps a lot, unless hard water was used frequently for make up and a thin coat of minerals has deposited inside the core and acts as an insulator. .ALso look for pinched hoses.
c) a third option is not interesting at all, but when it happens it gives other signs: blown head gasket. In this case the cooling circuit fills up with air or exhaust and carries no heat and this translates in engine overheating, which you would have noticed; the 3.8 is not prone to that trouble.

if the the temperature door actuator is gone haywire is that a big job to fix. I really dont want to take the dash apart.
Is there a easy way to fix it so the hot is always on.
I bought the car used . no idea.

as for clogged heater core if it cant be clean it i guess the dash has to be taken apart.

Re: heater problem

Flushing the core is done from the engine compartment.
I have no personnal experience about getting to the diverter actuator. Better read and look carefully at the post i mentioned before , photos speak for themselves, but one says you can reach the actuator lever once you remove the glove box.
