EGR port as an indication of high oil cunsumption??

I was cleaning the EGR port, and started wondering...

the carbon deposits in the egr port on my rodeo were very very dry, and fairly soft, broke apart easily with a screwdriver, and blown out easily. But the pic of the EGR that circulates on this forum shows "what appears to be" oily carbon deposits (that pic is below). I wonder what analysis could be drawn from the difference of carbon deposits in the EGR, does oily deposits indicate you have a high oil consumption problem, and conversely, does dry deposits indicate the engine is not burn oil excessively, or is there some other analysis that could be drawn. My truck does not burn oil, so I wonder if the EGR port could be an indicator of the oil problem which I could monitor.

I suppose it would be really messy inside the common chamber & EGR if the engine had severe blow-by and/or oil burning. Thing is, even the cleanest running 1998+ 3.2/3.5 will still carbon/soot up the end of that EGR pipe in the common chamber. Just the nature of the beast. By the time the hot exhaust gas in the EGR system hits the end of the pipe, it gets cooled so rapidly by the cold intake air, that the water vapor & junk just condenses out & collects towards the end of the tube. Good thing is, it's super easy to get at & clean!! It's a total nightmare to clean in most vehicles.

sounds like you agree, but perhaps i could confirm?

my egr port had very dry deposits, would that not be the case if i had the normal oil cosumption issue, IOW, they'd be oily deposits if i had oil consumption problem. I understand i'd have deposits either way, i just wonder if it can be looked at as an analysis of the engine's perfomance in relation to the oil burning problem.

i agree, cleaning the egr and port was easy, and that's coming from someone who did not know what an egr was a month ago!!!

What is all involved in cleaning the EGR?? I read the faq and saw some pictures and read soemthing about tighting in a screw as far as it would go but the picture wasnt very good and the instructions were vague.

Cleaning the EGR is easy.

unplug the wire going to it. Undo two blots and then spray it out. Use a screw driver to move the spring valve open and close. Reinstall. Takes about 10 minutes.

hey dober89, i was in the same boat until 4 days ago. i took me about a month of poking around the forum to figure it out, i finally did it 4 days ago with successs. I am mechanically inclined, but only had limited knowledge of car maitenance, so it took me some time to apply the knowledge i learned from this forum and actually do the cleaning. If you can wait a day or two, i can get some pictures that will make it a bit clearer for the newbies (like me). My thanks to all those on the forum for their previous posts, you made it possible for me to get the egr clear (and clear in my head on how to do it)!!!

I had the same problem with my fuel gauge going out on my 2000 rodeo. I took it to my local dealer and they fixed the problem and it was all covered under warranty. They replaced the fuel pump assembly and the sending unit. They also said that my EGR valve and gasket was bad and I needed a new one. They total cost for this was going to $550.00 dollars so I told them just to fix the fuel sending unit and I would bring it back.

Well that is why I am on here today and from the looks of it I can just clean the EGR and that should fix the problem (if the really is one). All my check engine lights went off with the replacing of my sending unit but the dealer said I have a lot of carbon build up on my injectors and my gas mileage is going to plummet.

$550 sounds way high. I've read many posts where the EGR valve is being replaced, and most here don't think that is necessary, that a cleaning will suffice. You should also clean out the EGR port which runs from the EGR valve, trough the intake, and has an opening that can seen through the Throttle body.

I've als seen a decarbonization process for the injectors, i recall it was about $150. If you had been using a fuel cleaner the whole time, that should not be necessary. I've read that using BG44K fuel cleaner a few times can realy do the trick also, it's available at dealers (like GM). Do a web search on BG44K, you'll see it's highly recommended for neglected injection systems, and after using it, you can return to using something like Chevron Techron concentrate once before every oil change to maintain the system.

My best advice, search egr/fuel cleaner/techron/pcv on this forum, there is so much there, that it takes a day or two to figure it out. But, it beats putting faith in garage that may not have you in the best interest.

I've learned most of the above after exhaustive research of this forum, and I thank all of those for the work they've done here, it's got me from being a slave to the unkowns of maitenance.
