very light oil for S. Florida
My 2003 Accord EX V6 manual recommends using 5W - 20 motor oil. This seems very light oil for a typically torrid Florida summer to me, so I asked the mechanics at the dealer if this recommendation was correct. They said (of course) that it was, with no explanation for why. For comparison, I use 10W - 40 (winter) and 20W - 50 (summer) in a 1989 Toyota Camry, & have for years with no ill effects (that car has 150K miles now).
Does anyone have any explanation for why Honda recommends this light oil, and is this oil too light for a Florida summer or not? |

When I went to the dealer to get the recommended type of oil they said 5W 20 all year round here in MASS. He was blabbering about that weight of oil was almost specifically designed for Honda's and Ford's. I wasn't really paying attention to what he was saying. Everything after 5W 20 was blah blah blah blah

Just use what the owner's manual says - why argue? Every mfr is different.

I really want to know if the light weight oil recommended by Honda is good enough for the tropical heat of a Florida summer (8 months of high temps > 85 F, lows > 75 F), highs > 90 F every day JJA, as I like to keep the car as long as feasable from a mechanical standpoint. My lifetime average is ~15 yrs for keeping a car, and frequent changes with the proper oil isnecessary to accomplish this.

First - I believe that the manufacturer knows best. They know people drive in Florida (and Arizona, where it gets a LOT hotter).
Second, I live in South West Florida, and I've been using the recommended (light weight) oil in 3 accords (one '91 and two 93's) all the time. No detectable engine wear in a total of about 300,000 miles. |

Thank you for sharing your experiance. This Accord is the first car I ever owned that recommended such thin oil except for use in the winter in Wyoming, where I lived 25 yrs ago. Its even hotter in SW FL than in Miami, on average, so your experience should be a good guide. I was a bit nervous using the thin stuff, as this is the most continually hot place I've lived in. I use 20W - 50 in my '89 Camry, (except DJF) as it tends to burn a bit more with the recommended 10W - 40
