'99 SL2 radio display backlight out
the backlight for the display on my wife's '99 SL2 went out. Is this a separate fuse or is there a bulb gone? All other lights on the radio work, except the backlight for the display.
Any help you folks can give would be appreciated. thanks |

It definitely sounds more like a bulb; if it was a fuse, all the radio lights would be out. It really isn't that logical (at least to me) to have a fuse for every bulb for the radio cuz that probably would be a lot of fuses. You can check them anyway, (assuming the 99 location is the same as the 97) one fuse panel there is a cover on the bottom of the center console on the passenger side, the other under the hood. Check if anything is blown and replace it. I have never dealt with the saturn radio personally (always used aftermarket stuff) the faceplate probably comes off somehow; get a haynes manual or a chiltons manual for $10-$20 and they'll show ya how.

I have had to take my radio apart once because ALL of the bulbs weren't working. The one I worked on was from a '95, and I'm not sure if it's the same as your model. But anyway, I couldn't get to the bulb that was behind the display. I don't really reccomend taking the radio apart though, the little plastic tabs that go from the buttons on the circuit board to the buttons on the face plate break off VERY easially. I can't use the preset station buttons and more, and when I unplug the battery for my car, I have to take the radio apart again to turn off the stupid Dolby NR.

Re: '99 SL2 radio display backlight out
So did you find that the bulbs you replaced were soldered to the board?
How come you couldnt' get to the one on the display? |

My lights went out as well behind the gauges. There is a bulb called a cluster. You have to take out the entire gauge module under the dash to get to it. If I'm not talking about the same thing. Sorry. But that was my experience.
