Do radiator caps (Mugen or Spoon) have got any drawbacks (especially in winter)? Thanx!

(Please move it to the `Letīs get technical!ī forum if it doesnīt belong in here!)

At first: Why not??

Okay, Iīll explain it to you. At first I wanted to buy an oil-filler cap from a brand like DC-Sports, Mugen, Spoon,....The problem with that is that there is no european brand which is offering nice products for Hondas (Except maybe Momo but I donīt like their design either!) so that I have to choose between the imported products from several brands (like DC-Sports, Mugen, Spoon,...=>imported=>expensive). But the price of the DC oil-filler cap isnīt much lower than the one from Mugen for example. And then I saw that these radiator caps (Spoon or Mugen) are even cheaper than the oil-filler caps of the same brands and that they have got about the same price than the DC oil-filler caps over here! And we donīt have got another brand whoīs offering radiator caps over here. So what would you do? Buy the more expensive oil-filler cap with no real purpose other than looking better or buy the cheaper radiator caps which are also looking better than stock but might even have got a purpose sometimes?? Do you got my point?

Iīm thinking about it like that:
Do you really need a new exhaust for $600 to get a gain of 3hp and to keep your neighbours awake because of the annoying sound it makes? - NO!
Do you really need all this suspension stuff on your daily driver? - NO!
Do you really need this original Mugen bodykit? - NO!
.........
Do you get my point? I want to say that most of the stuff most people are buying for their cars isnīt really necessary but they still keep buying it! So you could ask this question to anybody in here because most cars are just normal daily drivers which really donīt need this cool looking racing muffler and all this stuff. There are only a few true racers in here so if we would always ask `Why do you want to get this?ī we could close AF because nobody REALLY needs aftermarket parts at all!!! Or am I wrong?

exhaust is good if u actually have sum engine mods and uh turbo or sumthing i dunno

suspension makes handling a ton better, and umm thats why most ppl use their "daily driver" for more things than daily driven

mugen bodykit looks cool

a radiator cap is umm well a cap, it does nothing but look different, waste of money

all the things u mentioned actually do have a purpose and i dunno where u get that ppl who mod their cars use them for just daily driving, a lot of ppl go on tracks and country roads to screw around etc. or as for bodykits, they either are rich and like awesome looking cars, and perhaps compete in autoshows

Um,...yea....whatever. You didnīt get my point! Read more carefully and donīt talk crap if you donīt know it any better. ( I was pretty sure that everybody would understand what Iīm talking about!)

Actually a new radiator cap has got a purpose but Iīm not sure if Iīd really need it one day. Itīs more for show Iīd guess... But itīs anyways cheaper for me instead of buying a new oil-filler cap of any brand available over here. Hereīs the original comment about it from Kingmotorsports (about the Mugen radiator cap): `This radiator cap is a high-pressure type that increases the pressure inside the radiator, thus raising the coolant boiling point and increasing cooling efficiency. The open valve pressure is 1.3kg/cmē compared to the normal 1.1kg/cmē. It demonstrates its power under high-load situations such as circuit driving.ī

Now gentlemen lets all keep this friendly.

Raising the pressure in your radiator to conter an over heating problem should only be done as a last resort. A far better, safer and more effective method is to recore the radiator with a bigger core, or prehaps install a high flow water pump.
Riasing the pressure should be avoided, it can cause other things to fail, and dons't address the real problem of why the cars is over heating.

However, having said that, if you do need to raise the pressure then almost any good auto parts store will sell a variety of caps in differnt pressures for your car. There's no need to import an overpriced one from Mugen.
All your getting is a normal cap set to a differnt pressure than stock and wil mugen printed on it. I could get a Marker pen, and make my own one for a lot less money.

They have absolutly no purpose in the motorsport. a name will not make the car faster.

However if your into building show cars, then they have a use, and deffinte market.
Although I dont agree with building a car that will only ever be shown and not driven, it is still a valid form of car enthusiasim. and deserves as much respect as any other.

I merely asked why to see if that was what you were doing, or if you wanted to buy one becasue you thought it had a more functional purpose. (and becasue Iv never really understood why someone would build a show car, when driving a car is much more fun. )
