Need some advise before I take my 2000 Intrepid (w/65,000)
to the shop. At speeds above 50, the rear noise is very loud. It sounds like excessive road/tire noise, not a grinding or rubbing type noise. The rear brakes were recently replaced but that did not change the problem. Rear tires are still in OK shape. In addition, at speeds above 50 the car will drift/pull to the left. A front end alignment did not correct that problem but did improve it. I'm hoping someone had a similiar problem and could suggest possible things to check or have checked. rear bearings? rear tires? thurst angle alignment? Thanks.... |

Re: Intrepid Rear Noise at higher speeds
one step at a time, the rear noise, could be tires that have the steel belts seperated and they're banging around on the inside of the tire. worse case scenario, is that your rear wheel bearings are shot. the pulling to the left, you might have mismatched tires or your tire pressure is uneven. I realized that with my 02 intrepid when after I rotated the tires, the car pulled to the left really bad. that was because the tire pressure was uneven.

Thanks for the info. I'll start with the tires.

Update:
For the front end pulling problem, I had the front tires rotated left to right and the problem followed the tire. It was pulling left. After the rotation, it pulled right. Tire pressure was good, even, and tires were spin balanced. For the road noise in the rear, I had the tires replaced. No more noise. Replaced all four tires and she is running like a new car now. There were BFGoodrich on the front and the original Goodyears on the back. I replaced them with four new Michilins from Sams Club. Thanks to all. |
