Putting back together the monster

Ha. I have worked all weekend on my old car, 90 CRX si. With all the aftermarket crap done to it. I set the timing a tooth off I am almost positive.
The crank key was pointed straight up when I put the belt on. I put the balancer on and it had a dot from someone before me. It was off by about a half inch. I thought well maybe I was wrong so I took it off again got #1 to what I thought was TDC and did it again and it lined up the same was again.
So I went with it stuck it back in the car (the motor)hooked it all up and it wont start for shit. The dizzy is loose but no matter how I turn it it wont start. It will however start with the use of starting fluid and run (very shitty) for about as long as it takes to burn off(starting fluid). I am getting spark the wires are on correct to the book and my best knowledge. Fuel is going to the injectors because I discovered a bad seal going from the fuel rail to the #1 injector.
I think I need to set the timing in line with the dot that is on the balancer which is a tooth more. Does this sound right to you alll?

Re: Putting back together the monster

.....considering the car wont run on its own I havent had a chance to see if its throwing any codes.

So no one knows if the cranks key slot points up or a little off to the exhaust side of the motor?

Re: Putting back together the monster

There should be a tdc mark on the crank gear that should line up with an arrow on the block. You'll probably have to take the whole gear back off to find it, but it's there. Had that problem with my motor at first... Couldn't find the mark on the gear. This does involve taking your lower timing cover off as well.

Re: Putting back together the monster

THere will be a line on the top of the gear... Like someone took a chisel and hit the top of the gear real hard. There should also be an arrow on the block itself (under the timing cover) that that mark should line up to. It is just slightly towards the exhaust manifold, but I'm not sure what the key position is...If nothing else, you should have a mark on your accessory flywheel (on top of the wheel) that should line up with a line on your timing cover.... Give it a try... It might take some time to find, but once you do, you will be kicking yourself for not finding before now.

Re: Putting back together the monster

nah if its there I will find it....I think its the timing cause when I turn the dizzy all the way to the front ti wants to start.
then I also think I have no fuel getting to the cylinders.

Im almost positive the key doesnt end up just straight up when you set the bottom end to tdc. look for that mark on the gear, you cant go wrong with that
