Re: Distributor upgrade

If you want HEI, I suggest you get HEI. HEI is a GM propitery "name" for their product. If you're looking for the best ignition for the money, MSD is the best, plain and simple. Mallory is also excellent. Accell is for those with "just as good" syndrome.
You can modify your original distributor with a Mallory Unilite kit, a Petronix magnetic implusle kit, and the Crane magnetic kit. All of these go in the stocker and work well. You would need to upgrade your coil for them.
The HEI isd a self-contained system, offering very good durability and high performance spark. It is limited in RPM capability, as it requires 8 points to be "in line" to fire, rather than the single "point" required by the other electronic units. To install HEI, all you need is a switched 12-volt source (no resistance) plugged into the "BAT" terminal on the cap.
