head gaskets

does anyone know how long the head gaskets on a 98 neon will last with 83k mi on it? i only ask because my uncle said neons are notorious for having head gasket problems.

Re: head gaskets

It kinda varries by the car/driver/conditions.
Does it have any signs of failure at this time? (I.E. oil leak, smoke, mixed fluid...)

Re: head gaskets

it does not vary on the driver it depends on the idiot that would buy a neon.

Thumbs down

Stock gaskets composite untol the 00 model year then theywent to mls (multilayered steal) were junk, they havea tendency to leak and cross contaminate the cooling system.
Agree with your uncle!

i have 93000 on my 98 DOHC and it works just fine. From what i have found out on www.neons.org most if not all of the 98's had the better head gaskets. 97 and back had the bad ones that went out before 60K. So i would say if you have 83K on yours then you are good. There is no reason to replace the head gasket unless it is leaking. But i would think about doing the timing back in the next 10K miles. If that breaks then you have to have the head rebuilt and you are talking about a ton of cash.

Re: head gaskets

Exactly what 98JADENEON said... Your head gasket should be fine unless you are experiencing signs of it giving out like oil in the coolant and what-not. However, I would highly recommend getting your timing belt changed before you reach 100k. You might as well change out your water pump for a new one while your in there as well, as you can easily access it during the timing belt job. If you have a SOHC and are doing the work yourself, you can find a SOHC Timing Belt How-To HERE.

Well lets see here

If the neon is fixed with the MLS headgasket it will not blow ever again. Every neon made after 1998 build year came with the MLS gasket from the factory.

i do not no if i would go as far to say it will never blow again but yes if you have the MSL head gasket it will last a long time more than 100K without a problem and that is normal for most head gaskets. now if you start modding it with a turbo or NOS figure on replacing it alot more.

Re: head gaskets

I have a 95 neon with +300,000 k's on it...I have replaced the head gasket 3 times...and once I even got the copper head gasket which is suppose to be almost impossible to blow...but low and behold the head gasket is gone again...I got oil leaking into my rad fluid now....95-99's have this problem I think...so be prepared ppl!

if you blew out a copper one i would say your head is warpped. i have a turbo daytona that has over 300 hp and i run 25 PSI and i have not blown my head gasket yet. now on my laberon with the same set up i blew 2 head gaskets within 25K miles and when i had the head checked it was bad. i would have your head checked out

Re: head gaskets

i don't have any problems with my head, but if it does warp, would it be best to get it machined down again or just to get a new head?

depends on how much they have to take off. if it is to much you will have a timing problem because of the overhead cam. you could also have tension problems with the belt. the machine shop has all specs on what will work and will not. places also make spacers if they take to much off but i do not like those.
