1989 Supra /Valve Job ????
I have just recently bought a 1989 Supra Turbo that seems to be in really good condition other than it "probably" needing a VALVE JOB ( low compression on cylinder #4 and some oil leakage which has not yet affected the driving much !!! I bought it fairly cheap so i was willing to take a chance on the Valve Issue. I have no Idea how much a Valve Job is if i brought it to the Shop or if My Hubby could easily fix it himself. We are Military so Time and Money is always short for him
we really like the car...actually i think hubby plans on taking it over soon since it sure beats his Ranger...LOL..but would like to find out a bit more about it also he was trying to replace the stereo system since the car still came with the original tape deck but even thou he has installed all the wries right and doubled checked twice, the Stereo won't power up...is it possibly a fuse probelm ???? I appeal to ALL YOU SUPRA FANS...help a Newbie out to get our Supra spiffed up like it suppose to be

Re: 1989 Supra /Valve Job ????
If the valves need any conditioning at all, it will require taking it to a machine shop most likely, If you had some money "lying around" (taken loosely) I would suggest replacing the pistons and the rods as well if your going to have to tear down the motor. That way you can be certain that good quality parts are in there and it's going to be 100% reliable on the bottom end. Have the valves checked and if need be, rebuild the head back to factory and enjoy the car
The cost on a MKIV supra is roughly 5k so I would say roughly 3 maybe 4k for an 89 model but not sure. Though having oil in the #4 cylinder doesn't really sound like a bent valve or anything like that, if you're losing compression it might be a wearing down head gasket. As for the radio issue, I would check the fuses on the radio as well as the whole car itself. Make sure the grounds on the wires are good too just to make sure. Other than that, the radio should be fine. If not, try going to a car audio shop and asking for a wiring harness for the car, after that it's simply take out the factory radio, cut and splice the wires that are the same colors and put the aftermarket radio back in. Good luck.
