I´m about ready to do an oil change on the transmission, what is the recommened interval to change it? I think that the owners manual wants me to wait to long, specially since it gets in the low 100´s in the summertime. Is this something I can do or do I take it to the quick lube and have them do it? How many quarts does it take? Thanks a lot!

Smell It.
Pull the tranmission dip stick out.
Smell the oil. If smells burnt than I replace it. I replace my oil once a year no matter what. Also do this with your powersteering fluid. |

Do a complete change including the torque converter fill. And change the filter (make sure the O-ring comes out with the old one) it will take about 12-14 quarts with a complete drain down, otherwise it will be about 7 if you leave torque converter alone.A clogged trans filter will cause a world of hurt to these hydromatics.DO NOT OVERFILL (not even a pint)

Re: Tranny oil change
Really, the piston too? I think it´s getting scary now, how much would the stealership (I mean, dealership) charge me for something like that?

Oh please! you might as well buy a new tranny for what the dealership will charge. It's really not hard at all, just a little time consuming compared to a engine oil change. All those 1/2 in. hexhead pan bolts is about as hard as it gets.Oh and getting the oil to drain into one corner of pan. Unless u hav the proper drain pan for transmissions (which I did not).

no no
NO stay away from the dealer they normally dont have a tranny tech and just change them, go to a reputable tranny shop iam sure they've seen ton's of these tran's and know their way around them quite well or as skipr said jack up the truck and get at it! you can buy a manual to walk you thru it but if you have the cash go to the shop leave it in there hand's! like i said bud do some research it'll help alot. cheers

Re: Tranny oil change
Thanks for the replies, now that you mention it thee is a reputable tranny shop in town, heck I think they even do 2wd to 4wd conversions and stuff. I´ve driven manual transmissions all my life, this is the first automatic I own so I don´t know my way around an automatic that well. Christmas bonus season is two weeks away I guess...I´ll start shopping around.
