Can anyone help!
99 Staurn with 45,000 miles, started having problems starting when cold out. Had it to Saturn shop, there diagnosis was also cranks but don't start. Recommend changing temp sensor / fuel pump and sendor, check gas pressure, was none. $1000.00 to repair but they couldn't grantee these repairs would fix the problem!! Not please with the diagnosis, I picked the car up and replaced the temp sensor, IAC, cleaned the throttle body and checked gas pressure (45 psi) and holds at rail for quite awhile, has spark. Pulled spark plugs and they are dry no fuel. Any suggestions? |

Re: 99 Starting mystery
what motor? but have you checked fuel pump prime? is it getting fuel to the rail when key is first turned on? it could be as simple as a fuel filter bad. you could have clogged fuel injectors. it could be a battery going out.
did the problem happen right when it got cold, or did it take some time after many cold days?

Re: 99 Starting mystery
1.9 DOHC. When the key is first turned on it primes to 42 PSI. The battery had been replaced within the year. Never ran the car below a 1/4 tank of gas.
It started happening when it got cold outside. When its warm out, not a problem. |

Re: 99 Starting mystery
that usually points to a bad battery then.

Re: 99 Starting mystery
I checked connections, all fuses to the ignition and gas pump including relay switches. Nothing indicates faulty.
Is there some sort of control switch I'm misssing that would contribute or keep the injectors from opening? Today it's warm here about 65 degrees, the car starts no problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Re: 99 Starting mystery
Battery was not the problem! After trouble shooting sensors I have pined it down to the "Crankshaft position sensor" This sensor should have a resistance value of 700 - 900 ohms continuous. When tested during warm condition ohms were correct. To test under cold conditions I put the sensor into a "freezer" with leads hanging outside connected to my ohm meter. As the temperature droped the resistance was broken, thus no signal. "BINGO"
Replace sensor, no problems starting since. This morning was 32 outside, car started right up! Thanks to all who helped!!! |
