painting ws6 rims
my brothers car is a 86 trans am WS6, it has the 16x8 rims, they are gold, and ugly. he plans on painting them black or a dark gun metal grey, his car used to be black with the gold around the bottom to match the wheels. he had it painted a year ago jet black and the rims stick out like a sore thumb. you guys got any pointers on what kind of paint will stick and what kind of sand paper to sand them down with? thanks.

Re: painting ws6 rims
What color is the car? and Your suppose to use a coarse sand paper to scuff up the rim so the base coat sticks better then use a very/extra fine paper in between coats and finish with a 2 layers of clear coat. Sorry I don't remember the grit count but any auto parts sotre should have labeled coarse or fine and very fine.

Re: painting ws6 rims
I would say to paint them a meduim gray color or if he can find a realistic metal finish (such as chrome or nickel) to use that. Also put at least 4 base coats on before doing a clear coat and only allow 15 minutes for the clear coat to dry in between coats(that way it remains sticky and doesn't run while still being partially dry.)

Re: painting ws6 rims
Make sure the paint can take a lot of temperature, and be sure to coat it with clear polyurethane enamel after you paint it.Thats the stuff they use on bowling balls. Its fairly chip resistant. Also look into aircraft paint, its supposed to be resonably durable against temeperature and weathering.be sure to prepare the work area, and taking your time is important

Re: painting ws6 rims
Oh yeah dont sand them, use Aircraft paint stripper* and follow it up with superfine steel wool.it doesnt have to feel rough just for the paint to stick.

Yes, the aircraft paint stripper is definitely a better route to go...you should be able to pick that up at either an auto parts store or definitely at a local paint shop. Its worth the money and time.
