Ferrari 250 GTO restoration project

Right now I'm in a period of restoring some of my old modeling failures. I've had my eyes on the nasty 250 GTO in the bookshelf for a long time, thinking it would be nice to fix it up since it is a pretty decent and detailed kit and a really beutiful car, but I made a really crappy build when I did it 15 or so years ago. I think this is a Revell kit but Im not sure. Anyone recognize it?
Not much was painted exept the body so all the parts were in a good condition, but there was glue everywhere, and what a strong glue it was ! damn.. At least every tiny little part is still there exept for one rear lamp.
The body paint was a miserable black brushed with crappy decals and clearcoat.

Hope you will enjoy seeing this model restored from crap to beauty !

The situation at the beginning:

Taken apart and body ready for paint stripping:

A "few" layers of paint stripped off. Looking real ugly now :

A layer of primer to see all the little defects. You can already see the beautiful shape of this old ferrari:

A lot of 400-grit paper and putty later:

Started to repaint the chromed wire wheels. They are not very shiny on the real 250 GTOs so I gave them a shot of tamiya chrome silver:

Stay tuned !

Yeah, it's the Revell and not the ex-Aurora kit either. I can tell just from those lousy tires.

You're doing an excellent job rebuilding it though. Keep at it and do the Scuderia proud.

Looking at the ride height of your old model, I advise you to lower the suspension as well. At least a few millimeters...

This is my Gunze Sangyo model and the ride height is a lot lower :

And keep up the great work! I'll keep an eye on this thread

Yes, the ride-height needs to be lowered. Trying to figure out how to do this in a invisible way. I want the chassi still looking stock..
Your red 250 GTO looks wonderful by the way..

I have been working on the engine since the last update. Repainted and a light black wash and some heat stain on the headers.
Here it is, testfitted in the chassis:

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO restoration project

Finished and installed the rear suspension except for the brakes.
Managed to fix the ride-height. A test fit of the body looked promising, but more on that later.
Some pics:

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO restoration project

Nice work so far. Looks great.

It's always nice to go back and rebuild the kits that you don't like and you know you could have done better. I seem to be doing that quite a bit these days. It's loads of fun, and you get to see what you've learned in the past years. Like on a ton of my cars, I have about a gallon of glue just holding the windows in place.
