89 Accord LX altenator removal.....

Is it possible to remove the altenator from an '89 accord without removing the halfshaft? I've read several post here saying it can be done.. I have the wires disconected, and the bolts removed from the altenator, but i've twisted, pushed, pulled, and cussed, still unable to get it out. Just wondering if i was missing something that was right in front of me, like that damn 12mm open end wrench i looked for a half hour for, and then found it in my back pocket! Thanks for your help.
