Villager versus Caravan Tranny problems
I'm a '96 Dodge Grand Caravan LE (GC) owner and I've had it with Dodge. I've been through three transmissions including the one that came with my GC when I bought it new. Enough is enough. I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it up the tailpipe anymore.
Here's the thing... I am just wondering if Villagers suffer from the same transmission failures that I have had on average every 68,000 miles or 3 years, whichever comes first. I'm sick and tired of replacing transmissions at $2,600 a pop every three years. Would anyone care to speculate whether or not I might do better with a Villager? Got an opinion? I'd love to hear what you have to say. |

Had my 94 villager since 95 and never had a problem at all and I am setting at 155,000 miles. Done nothing to the trans. but changed the fluid and filter when it needed to be changed.(Knock on Wood)

Re: Villager versus Caravan Tranny problems
villagers sometimes have tranny problems between 70 and 90k but usually dont require replacement just to replace damaged rings. of course once this is done they seem to last forever. this pertains to the 90s models i cant speak for the newer 2000 models.

Most people forget, this is a japanese mini-van. Mercury and Nissan collaboration. Your not going to have ANY dodge or chrysler transmission problems here.. VILLAGER IS THE WAY TO GO!!!!

villager/caravan transmissions
I've had a 89 Ply. Grand Voyager - 225,000 and it's on it's 3rd transmission! First last till about 80,000 second to 160,000 so that gives me about 15,000 more before the next one is due.
I have a 94 villager -155,000 - no problems - as mentioned - it's a Nissian Quest with a Mercury tag on it. At least the older ones- heard the new ones were switching to Mazda or something like that. The villager does seem quite a bit smaller though - maybe the Grand had another foot onto it, but seem more cramped but we like it. It's too bad because I like the voyager - just afraid to buy another one - didn't want to be buying transmissions every few years. |
