look into a 1st generation talon/eclipse. you can find em real cheap and there are tons of mods you can do to them

you can get a decent AWD eclipse/talon for around 3k, then you would have another 2k to blow on mods

most any car makes a formidable drag car, assuming you have the time and money.

If you're looking to "Fly" off the line, look more closely into AWD cars in specific. RWD cars are pretty hot off the line too. FWD cars have the hardest time from a dig.

My dad is wanting to sell his '96 Trans Am. It's silver ext, black leather int, auto trans. About 75k miles I think. Has Richmond 3.73 rear gears, the stock 2.73 sucked. K&N FIPK, and Hypertech programmer. Stock 16" chrome 5 starts have Firestones on 2, other 2 are BFG drag radials. Also has set of silver 16" off a 2000 Trans Am with near new Goodyear Eagle GSCs. Body is perfect, and interior is good, has the normal wear that these cars show. I think he's wanting around $7k. A little more than what you are wanting to spend, but it pretty much already ready to go.

This doesn't sound like a drag-car to me. When someone says drag car, I think Gas Ronda and '41 Willys and stuff. Drag cars race at tracks only. Sounds like you want a daily driver with a few mods and hope to be in the mid teens. I wouldn't take that car to the track. My suggestion, forget racing and buy something easy on gas until you get about 30 grand to spend on a real drag car.

Lots of people are into the 11s and 10s with their daily driver or weekend cruiser with much less than 30k into the car. You want RWD or AWD if you like good launches. RWD preferably. Look into mustangs, camaros, rx7s, supras, talon/mitsus, nissan 300zx, etc. A mustang 5.0 or camaro with a v8 will be your best best for cheap and easy to mod for a fast car. $5k is very very steep though... you can probably buy a crappy 80s 5.0 and get into the 12s with $5k.

about a 92 awd talon tsi will be your best bet w/ that kind of money, i have seen a tsi w/ enough whp and torque to pull the front wheels off the ground, the guy makes 4 passes on the track and has to re-torque the head bolts! and its street driven running 11's in the 1/4. and if you think that an 11 is all you can squeeze out of a street driven car...dont forget kenny trans street driven supra that runs 7.5's in the 1/4. but a supra is a lot more than you are looking to spend. say 20g for a good unmoded 94 spd tt. 5.0's due usually tend to haul ass at the strip too. ive seen one run a 5.5 in the 1/8.

Find a 97-2002 GTP, you can put it a lot of mods, cheap, GTP has 240HP stock, you can add 30-35HP with a 3.4 supercharger pulley wich costs around $70dlls, thinks about it.

Look at:
www.clubgp.com
Photo Gallery and 1/4 Mile times.

Thanks

most of them, are daily driving GTP's and they make 11's - 13's sec at 1/4 mile, 6cyl supercharged, you need to drive one...

GTP is good, but Mustang 5.0 is cheaper and RWD, and once you put forced induction on it like the GTP has, it won't even be close. Go for a 5.0, Z28, or Trans Am.

only time ive ever been beaten by a mustang is when i get a crappy launch or the guy has 10k+ put into his car

I said nothing about the 5.0 Mustang being faster than the DSM...although once you are going drag-only, it will be...I'm talking about Mustang 5.0 vs. GTP. And yeah, RWD is faster than FWD in a drag race.
