jettaGL overheated is it serious?
Hi my 92 jetta started right up yesterday but it drove rough for acouple
miles like it has bad fuel- 15 miles later sitting at a light it started over heating I let it cool and drove again and it was a repeat. I was wondering if this tends to be afore -shadowing of more UGLY behavior from my old but previosly loved&trusted car? thanks dogpaw |

Re: jettaGL overheated is it serious?
Did the cooling fan come on? If so, remove the reservoir cap then let it warm up (make sure it's full). Then put the cap back tight & rev the engien a few times. Carefully remove the cap & se how much pressure has built up in the system. It should not be much, if it's alot the start worrying about the head gasket.... You can also do a compression test & pressurize the cooling system if you have the tools.
If the fan doesn't come on then you need to address that first. |

Release the cooling system pressure (it's safer to warm it up with the cap loose) then tighten the cap & rev it a few times to see if it instantly builds pressure again. This would be a quick indicator of the head gasket condition, although it isn't very precise.
