Gauges

How hard would it be to swap a 'granny pack' to a 'ralleye pack' instrument cluster. Sorry, I'm still talking from my G-body days. What I mean is I have just the speedo with the idiot lights, and if I could find a real gauge cluster, how hard would it be to swap it into my LeSabre. It's a '95 Custom if that means anything.

I know GM says that later model radios won't work in the car, just wondering if '95 and later model gauge clusters would work in the car, and how hard it would be to swap them in.

Just thinking out loud, as usual. I just like having full gauges.

Have a good one!!

Dan

Re: Gauges

Well... idiots lights are simply lights that are turned on by the ECM/PCM, either by appling power or ground. Gauges are continuously varied according to the voltage or resistance present on the sensor wire connected to whatever sensor that gauge monitors. I.e. Unless the wires already exist under the console, it's likely more trouble than it's worth. Depends on if the extended gauge cluster was available on the 1995 LeSabre Custom... probably wasn't.

Re: Gauges

ebay has both a 95 (plain jane speedo only) and a 97 (w/gauges) gauge cluster. They appear to be the same shape/size.

95

97

EDIT: I guess it looks like the 95 cluster has longer bottom tabs. The 97 cluster says it fits 96-97 Lesabre. Hmm

here's a 93 Park Avenue Cluster

Re: Gauges

Right, they say it will "fit." Which means, "it will fit in the hole in your dash." That doesn't mean there will be any wires to connect to it, or the correct wires to connect to it. That all depends on the wiring harness behind there. If it was an option or even available on that model, then their is a change that the wiring harness includes those wires already, and there's a chance that those wires actually go somewhere. Only way to know for sure would be to pull the dash apart and sit there with a multimeter... or buy one and see if it fits and re-sell it if it doesn't... *shrug* Or buy it and run your own wires, LOL.
