Angry 90 Cherokee won't idle...

Hey Jeep people...I have a 1990 Cherokee Laredo and in the last year it started to idle lower and lower until finally it just stopped idling altogether. I drive it now like it's a manual with one foot giving it gas and the other on the brake. I know that's not good for the Jeep, but it's not really holding up it's end of the bargain. Admitedly it's got a lot of miles on it, but it was driving so nice before. I have a funny feeling that one of you (or all of you) will know exactly what's going on and how to fix it. I love my Jeep, but, like most of my relationships, I don't really understand it. Anyone's help will be greatly appreciated. You can e-mail me directly at [email protected] Thanks guys! -Brett

Re: 90 Cherokee won't idle...

Try checking if the fuel pressure. I had a similar problem with my 90' cherokee and it ended up being that the fuel pressure was droping off and it would idle very low and/or take a long time to start. The pressure should be around 39 psi at about 900 rpm running. Also when you turn the engine off, make sure that the fuel pressure stays up around the same (39 psi) or just above for at least 20 mins...

Re: Re: 90 Cherokee won't idle...

Ok...I know what the fuel pressure is, but I don't know how to check it or change it. I also got an e-mail from another person saying it may be the tps. I've heard a lot of problems with the tps have symptoms like the engine idling too high, which mine did every once in a while, but could that also make it idle low or not at all? I'll have to take the Jeep in to a mechanic to have it fixed (unless one of you kind souls is in Madison, WI) so I'd like to go in prepared and armed with the knowledge of what the problem could be and how much it should cost to fix. thanks for the help so far. -Brett

Re: 90 Cherokee won't idle...

Either the TPS or the AIC can be changed at home with basic tools. If oyu have a haynes manuel, it will tell you how to test these items before you go spending the money on the parts.
