My Check engine lights on i need step by step instructions on how to trun it off
My check engin light is on in my 98 honda prelude, not do to any problems. My friend was just messing around wth my engine and took a hose off when he had the car on and now the engine light is on permently. If someone knows how to turn off the light using step by step instructions i would aprreciate it, casue honda wants to charge $80 to turn it off.

Unhook the negative terminal for about 20 seconds. Or try pulling the ecu fuse out for 20 sec. Or both. That shud do it.

If disconnecting the battery is too much of a hassle for you. Open up the fuse box under your hood, and look at the diagram. Unplug the "Clock/Radio" fuse. (I think its labeled either 10 or 15) 30 seconds should do it.

yup. The ECU fuse might work.. but I always pull the clock fuse on my '91. Be warned though, it'll delete your preset radio stations, etc. It'll be either in the fuse box under the hood, or the one in the dash. I don't know on those 5th gens...
Once your ECU(car computer) sees something bad happen(EG your stupid friend playing with wires) it 'throws a code" Basically what this means is that it stores a number in the computer, indicating what happened. For example, if you have a misfire in one cylinder, once, it'll store that code until you clear it, even though it was a one time occorence. Clearing the code will eliminate the storage, and it should go off. If it doesn't, something is still wrong. Post back and we'll help you figure out what the code is and what it means. Also, you can put some electrical tape over the light, or just take the light out alltogether. That fixes it real fast. -J |
