volt meter verses amp meter
im trying to put an amp meter on a alternater and no matter how i hook it up it pegs out and melts the wires.. should i put a volt meter on in stead of a amp gage????

I would recommend a volt meter anyway. Amp meters don't tell you anything all that much more helpful and a volt meter is much less intrusive (and dangerous) than a amp meter
The reason you're blowing the meter out is because you're not supposed to put it directly off the alternator, but just off the battery, after the big cable that goes to the starter, but before the branch off that goes to the overall system. Some cars are wired such, this is nearly impossible without rewiring the car
