is it worth the $$$to hop a carbed 305 ????

i bought an 86 z-28....4 barrel 305...blah blah slow crappy bore and stroke and sloppy emissions junk...so now it is winter and im wondering if i should put money into it over winter to get er good or should i just sell it in the spring when prices are hot and look for a tpi, 350 or possibly a mustang ????one thing holding me back is that it is the last year for the carbbed camaros...will it be a classic that i am kicking myself in the ass for not keeping when im 40 cause it would be worth a lot more ????

idk...truthfully i used to be a mustang lover but the 3rd gens look a lot better than the 5.0 styles...but the performance is just the opposite ?? 350 tpi or 302...which is the best for the buck ...

I like 305's i got one in a chev silverado manual and i mean get a holley carb and a set of nice headers and you got a car. Future maybe a turbo or blower. Ive seen a couple 5.0L mustangs pull 9's.

Re: is it worth the $$$to hop a carbed 305 ????

well, what i would reccomend, and what i am doing myself with the IROC, is build yourself a new engine that you can swap in place of what you have. build it while you drive the car with the original engine. then after the new engine is ready to go in, pull the original engine and put in the new one. if you are worried about the collecter status, put the original engine on a stand wrapped in a sealed plastic bag, and put it in the corner somewhere out of the way. My IROC is an original TPI 350 car, unmolested and stock. im building a 302 to drop into her, which is will have much more power, so when i swap her in ill put the L98 on the engine stand out in the shed, and keep her just in case i decide one day to restore her to original specs. in fact im doing that with the whole car. every mod i make will be reverseable. and im keeping the old parts.

Re: is it worth the $$$to hop a carbed 305 ????

did you say 302? why not go 383. its alot better. a 305 can be built up pretty nice with the right parts. i think it would be pretty peppy if you do this we'll its my plans cause i can always swap the parts onto a 350 later that im getting. 600cfm edelbrock carb or better yet go with a demon. get rpm air gap intake manifold. aluminum heads. mild roller cam. msd ignition computer, a good dizzy. msd basically everything for ignition. new or rebuilt trans with shift kit. aluminum drive shaft. 9'' rear with 4.11's or 3.73's in it. then get some mickey tompson drag slicks. and im pretty sure you could hit 11's no problem
EDIT: dont forget the race fuel pump, and ported and polished heads. o yeah and headers of course. i might be forgeting something not sure

Re: is it worth the $$$to hop a carbed 305 ????

well first off, more cubes, i tend to agree are better, but the 302 im building will be able to spin 8000rpms all day, and make 450hp/430lbsft at the latest estamate according to desktop dyno 2000. which dosnt include the accel superram intake, thermal coatings, antifriction coatings, crank scraper, as well as a few other things. meaning power will be much closer to 500hp/450lbsft. so im not crying too much about having 81 fewer cubic inches.

also, a much more realistic estimate of 1/4 mile times for your example camaro is mid to high 13's with a 305. probly a bit slower. camaros are heavy, around 3500lbs, the engine you describe would make around 350hp maybe 400hp. and your gears would be maxed out before the end of the run due to the low rpm nature of a 305, so youd be above your peak power band. so id actually guess low 14's with that setup. no where near 11's. even with the 500hp engine im bulding, 3.27 gears, shifting at 6500rpms, ill be lucky to break into the 12's just cuz the third gens are such porkers.

Re: is it worth the $$$to hop a carbed 305 ????

oh and where that 383 will be a gas hound, ill be cruizing at low idle speeds getting 30+ miles to the gallon, always nice at $2 per gallon pricing.

but the real reason is nostalgia. the 1967-69 camaros were the ONLY gm car or truck to get the DZ302 which was built for trans am racing, and led the camaros to dominance in the racing serise in 1969. the engine hasnt been offered sense, and has thus been forgotten. Im building one to run in my 1989 IROC for emotional reasons, kinda the resurection of the spirt 20years later, the Z28 chevy SHOULD have built, ya know? also, i just think it will be cool to run the 302 badges on a 1" cowl hood.

Re: is it worth the $$$to hop a carbed 305 ????

you know whats weird. my car is a 305 in a third gen. i have 600cfm edelbrock carb, performer intake, minor head work, new th700r4 with shift kit and 3.73's in the rear, msd dizzy cap, rotor, high flow fuel pump, and wires. i took it for a top end speed and it went to about 120-125 tops at 4500 rpms.
once i put these headers on and give it a tune up. im pretty sure ill be in the 14's with new tires. mine dont grip well. i ran it once on a road that has been marked out like 10 years ago to a 1/4 mile. timed myself with my celly. spun lots off the line car slid sideways then hit second and back end kicked out a lil bit and ended somewhere around 95-100 mph and a time of high 15's. ok thats with stock exhaust and spinning bad.
i would say with aluminum ported and polished heads, aluminum drive shaft, headers, slicks, and a tune up ,new wires/dizzy cap and rotor/ plugs/ fluids. i could easly hit high 13's-mid 13's. yeah so maybe i exagerated a little with 11's with a 305. maybe with a 350 and that work done to it.
