I have a 1996 4-door SL with a clutch that has begun slipping worse with time. It started out that if you rev too high, the RPMs would spike and it would slip out of gear, as if you were pressing the clutch...when easing off the accelerator, it would catch. Now the problem is worse and the slipping happens in all gears at all speeds; acceleration is suffering because you can't apply high torque from the engine or it will slip.
The car has 80k miles; I think the clutch is just gone. Is replacing the clutch a serious job for a mechanic, or can I buy one and do it as a Sat. afternoon garage job? I'm a handy guy but have never done a clutch or a transverse engine job of any kind. Advice and/or a written procedure would be great help! Thanks, Marc |

Re: '96 SL Clutch slipping
I just had the clutch done on my wife's 97 SL...It is a job for the mechanic unless you have a garage with a lift....the whole sub-frame has to be dropped from the front of the car....I paid $980.00 at a friends garage...The dealship wanted over $1400.00
