I have a 2004 chevy malibu maxx LT with the new 3.5 ltr V6.
I NEED something to remove the governor and possibly something to adjust some engine settings. But the main thing is the governor. Since I live in germany and will be here until 2008, I don't care about warranty or anything of the such. I can't stand being on the autobahn going 105 mph and being laughed at while passed by a VW Golf!!!! B/c germans don't have governors. True the new 3.5 V6 is a great engine with lots of get up and go, but why have all that when it stops "going" in less that 20 seconds? IT really sucks. I hope you can find something for me or direct me in the right direction to get this feature FIXED! I do have a killer sound system with alpine 9" screen dvd head unit with double component speaker set in front and rear doors being pushed by kenwood 600W 4 ch amp, phoenix gold 2000W 2-ch amp pushing 2 - 15" fosgate power stage 2's at 1 ohm bridged. NOT BAD HUH? I still can only go 105 on the autobahn! PLEASE HELP. RADIO REMOVAL!!! I'm taking out the factory radio and replacing it with that alpine i mentioned, anybody out there replaced the factory radio yet in there's yet? Any problems? I heard when the oil light comes on it means the oil needs to be changed, and it won't go off unless you reset the oil life (which is in the radio menu settings). Any ways to hook up the aftermarket so it's easy to remove and replace the factory just to reset the oil light and other stuff? Does the remote start still work with the radio gone? (i figure it should, but i don't know for sure.) |

Re: 2004 Malibu Maxx LT RADIO/GOVERNOR!!!!!!!!
"Governor" is part of the engine controller calibrations. Speed limit is mainly due to speed rating of OEM tires.
The factory radio display is used for several non-radio functions that you will lose if you replace it with aftermarket (Outside Air Temp Display; Driver Info Center (trip odometer, range, fuel economy); Ability to personalize some vehicle functions; Warning messages (too numerous to mention but in your owner manual). I don't think you will have to worry about Oil Life warning if you replace the radio because the warning message pops up only on radio display. It does not turn on the low oil pressure telltale in cluster. I think you can reset oil life function another way using throttle but don't know the procedure. If you replace radio you will still have chimes working since the instrument cluster contains noise making device. However you will occassionally hear a chime that you won't be able to explain since the radio display won't be there to tell you what the vehicle was trying to let you know. The remote start will still work with the radio removed. |

that's what i thought, thanks for confirming the info on the radio.
as far as the governor goes, i know that information already, but i've put on "V" rated ultra performance tires since buying it and I want to disable that governor. ECM reflasher, piggy backs, etc, where can I find one for MY car? Or is there another way? I'm desparate as you can tell! thx in adv. |

Re: 2004 Malibu Maxx LT RADIO/GOVERNOR!!!!!!!!
More than likely, defeating the governor is going to require an ECU reprogram or "flash". Given that your vehicle is so new in the market, I highly doubt there are any aftermarket ECU "chips" available for purchase, wish means you must have the one you have reprogrammed. I have no idea how expensive this may be, especially given that you are in Germany. However, any time you are dealing with an ECU, it is not cheap and will definitely void your warranty. Keep in mind, while your Malibu is a pretty sweet car, it was not designed with the German autobaun in mind, like that VW was. However, that VW was not built with the Rust(Pot-hole) belt in mind either, like your Malibu was. Sometimes these electronic limitations are in place to prevent you from leaving the engineered limits of the aerodynamics and physics of the vehicle.
