shifting without using the clutch...

Today i was driving to work and i wanted to see if i could shift all the way to 5th gear without using a clutch pedal at all. I have done one gear before and it rarely goes in, but this time i got all 5 to go in without a grind at all and i didnt force it in to the gear or anything.

No there is nothing wrong with my tranny, My dad showed me this when i was about 8 years old and it interested me into how because i was never able to do it, he said you have to know the right time to shift and it will go in without a prob. No im not some 14 year old kid haha, im 23 and i can say im just bragging i guess haha, but i got to shift all 5 gears at 3,000rpm with no probs, the second gear i had to do a couple stop and goes to get in but all others went in smoothly.

This is not a habbit of mine to do this all the time, because there is a clutch for a reason, but its just a skill i have

The reason im writing this thread is to see if anyone else has tried this, or am i the only retard around here... and i dont suggest doing this to anyone, but just saying its possible if you know what you are doing, because my friends were scaptical of this so i kinda had to prove it to them. They all have acuras and crap, so i have to own them in everything i do .

My dad told me about that once, like 30 years ago or whatever when he was driving a beetle, his clutch cable snapped and he had to drive around for a week and he couldn't use the clutch lol.

Re: shifting without using the clutch...

know try to down shift all the way from fifth. its pretty cool when you know your car well enough to know a what rpm's match the gear speeds the only down fall is its pretty hard on the syncro's so i would be doing it toooo much.... just a little note

Re: shifting without using the clutch...

Synchro Killer.... Keep Doing It Nothing Bad'll Happen.

We Have A Shop Truck Here That Nobody Uses The Clutch To Shift Well One Day First Gear Was Not Exsistance So They Pulled The Tranny To Fix It And All The Synchros Were Flattend And First And Second Gear's Teeth Were All In The Bottom Of The Tranny Case.

The Only Transmissions Designed For That Type Of Abuse Is Straight Cut And Dog Ring Transmissions.

ive done this from time to time too. My dad taught me how to do it in my honda. He said that truckers do this alot because of all the shifting they do and that the tranny is better suited to do it. its not bad on the tranny IF you do it right. Speed shifting tends to work at higher rpms. My dad said what to do is to give it the gas then let off so there is no tension on the gears and then slip it into the next gear. All your doing is matching up the ground speed with the tranny speed. say your doing 60 at 4000rpm in 3rd and you know that you can do 60 at 3000 in 4th then all you have to do is get it up to 4000 and then let off the gas and then slip the gear back in at 3000 rpm and it SHOULD go in pretty smooth. You feel all high and mighty when you can do it in all 5 gears....the hardest time i have is getting to go from 2nd to 3rd for some reason but other then that they all fall into place. I wouldnt do all the time because it will affect the synchro if you keep grinding the gears and such.

its actually faster to shift the old fashioned way.....

maybe I can just shift lightning quick....

see when you shift like that, in terms of actual speed, you have to observe what the engine is doing and shift only at a certain time, this takes time when your waiting and looking for the right time to shift... when you use the clutch you can shift at anytime YOU want, not when the engine wants to.

Also if you know the right way to shift using the clutch and what you can and can't do, your actually using the clutch pedal for a shorter amount of time then the shifter is moving... so there is no possible way to shift faster without using the clutch, your gear changes are dependant on the movement of the shifter, which is more dependant on the design and interaction of the shift forks inside the transmission. Short shifters are just a gimmick basically... like a tornado air foil or some lil 20 dollar ebay chip. The best way to shift fast is to have a transmission designed for performance, and the 240sx's transmission is very smooth and has a nice shift gate for performance use.

learn to use your car the right way..... which is the way it was designed for... the transmissions have synchros and a clutch in them for a reason. Or you can't... and will end up spending more money on your car just for maintenance... and yes shifting like that is bad on your transmission, it is putting A LOT more wear on the parts inside the gearbox

Re: shifting without using the clutch...

haha, i did that with my old 85 prelude. it was wierd, but my cousin told me it was power shifing??? wth???? He had his datsun 510 setup for that. I tried quick shifting with my prelude w/o clutch and it could do it. but it had like 285K on it so i was just waiting for the car to breakdown. (1.8L 100 hp double barrel carb 130 max speed) I could also do it with my 240 but i prefer not to, i could put the stick in neutral with no prob w/o using the clutch. Is this the same with u guys?

Re: shifting without using the clutch...

Tried that the tranny started grinding, then tried to mach the rpms nicely, shifted from 2 to 3 and then to 4th without grinding gears, my dad did that in his old car, he drove the thing for 10 years so he was really used to it and knew when to shift.

18 wheeler drivers have to do it because they dont have syncros (double clutch ). it keeps the mileage between rebuilds higher.

i think your friend was saying to keep the foot on the gas without letting go and then quickly floor the clutch shift and let go , thats more like power shifting, this shifting without clutch thing doesnt realy benefit in anyway unless your clutch goes out or something lol...

and about me trying my 1-5 5-1 shifting tonight while ont eh way to work, that wasnt happening, the 1-5 i can do without any probs, but the downshifting part is different and i tried a few times but i was running late for work so i had to use my lightning fast shifting with teh clutch to make it on time hahaha... im not gonna try again, but its good to know you can do something like that.

I was actually driving tonight and i shifted from 3-4 without using the clutch and didnt even mean to NOT use it lol, so this cant become a habbit, so ill stop.
