Question gutting car and need advise, srs and rollcage

okay me and a friend are gutting his 2g gsx for straight out racing (hell yeah). so we have just about every thing out now., but I am still a little wary of the srs box that is under the console. the airbags were disabled a long time ago but my question is this.. is there any reason not to take out the srs "brain" box. Is it connected to the ecu or would it hinder the car from starting if the ecu doesnt read it's there. I want to be sure before I go ripping any thing out that has a shitload of wires running to and from it. furthermore, to shut his wife up we are putting in a roll cage even though we are not close to the e.t. that requires it and probably never will. so, anybody know of a vendor that sells a kit for this or would we better of just bending it out ourselves. any help would be appericiated.

Re: gutting car and need advise, srs and rollcage

A gutted 2G gsx could hit roll cage territory on a 16g, I wouldnt rule it out yet I dont know anything about the SRS setup, but I am not aware of any connection on the ECU for it. I know there are some dangers to workig with that system, be sure to take all necessary precautions. Now that I think about it, I might have a qualified shop do that portion of it.

You can get a roll cage kit for 1Gs from a couple vendors, never seen one for a 2g though. In reality, this is something that is best left to the professionals. Wouldnt it be a bitch to go through all the trouble of building a cage, and it doesnt pass tech? Even if you read the NHRA rule book, there are more than enough ways to screw it up. I'm personally going to use a shop that is run by a guy that is also the chassis inspector for my local track No chance of any having trouble with it passing tech.

I'm not too worried about the cage (i welded up the one thats in my old mustang and have passed at every track I have been to) but while the airbags aren't even in the car, I still want to be carefull because I don't want issues down the road later when we get the block back from the machine shop, and can't crank it because we threw out a part. I guess I'll call the a dealership and listen to 30 min of "thats illegal" bull. oh well. thanks Kevin. BTW just for the info we managed to lighten it up to the tune of 412.35 lbs already but this car will NEVER see the road again.
we loaded up all the crap we hacked and torched out to my work and used the material scales to find out. we were shocked it was that much.
I keep you updated on the srs box.
