cruise control
My 03 xterra has a cruise problem. Once it downshifts for hills, it won't upshift. Anyone experience this?

Re: cruise control
I'll say the same thing to you as I said to gijoebruin...
Let me say this before the hounds get you. There is no need to multi-post anything. I promise. Your question, comment, or concern will be delt with. Multi-posting annoys alot of people, especially people who "live" on forum boards, like this one. Also, your post should most likely be in the "Drivetrain" section. You'll get more people to notice it there (and less people pissed off ).Thanks

double post
Well, I didn't mean to double post my question, I simply put it in the wrong spot the first time. To all those who have nothing better to do than look for double posts, my apologies. Now, does anyone have the same cruise control problem?

If you post in the wrong section you can always delete your original post before posting somewhere else so as not to double post. It's not a question of having nothing better to do, but to keep replies in the same thread which will help you get the answer you want. It also helps the next person who comes along with the same problem. Welcome to the board. |

Yes, it's an Auto. The cruise stays on in a hill, it just won't upshift back to overdrive after a long pull, or into a head wind.

Re: cruise control
THis is normal. Just kick the cruise off and reset it when the tranny upshifts. I always kick the cruise off before a hill so as to avoid the tranny from downshifting. Most times I can maintain my speed without the downshift.

No, this isn't normal. Once the cruise starts this, it continues to downshift, even where most other cars would act normally. It will not remain in overdrive. I feel like maybe it is a computer problem.

Re: cruise control
This is not abnormal, the Xterra's cruise control is pretty bullheaded. When you have it engaged and climb a grade, the transmission likely isn't actually downshifting. It's staying in 4th gear but coming out of lockup, which sounds and looks like a downshift because the RPMs jump. The torque converter will not re-lock until nearly all load is removed from the driveline, but the cruise control won't back off enough to allow it.
Next time you think it "downshifts" turn off the overdrive. If you get another downshift, that's the actual kickdown to third (overdrive is just another name for 4th in our case). If you do this and wait until you have fully crested the grade before turning the overdrive back on, it will shift back to 4th and go back into lockup just fine. Use the O/D-off button anytime the cruise control makes the transmission drop out of lockup. It's nearly impossible to drop out of lockup in 3rd. Brent |
