1997 ford escort big problem/headache

Is anyone able to tell me if my engine is free wheeling or non free wheeling? My car died (just stopped running on the freeway) then made a horrible sound when I tryed to restart it. Towed it home a year ago and need help to determine where to start with the engine or the timing chain. Timing chain was just replaced not long before car died due to defective flywheel that separated and burnt out the alternater , which also had to be replaced. Also any suggestions on what to replace the rear springs with if I ever get this car running again? Thanks for any help.

Sounds like my 97 ford escort. The dealer said it threw a rod. They wanted $3000 to put in another engine. Good luck!

Double check the timing belt, make sure it's still in time.
I dont know what the hell the flywheel has to do with the alternator, but that shop was feeding you garbage.
I've practicly doubled the hp with my 97 Escort motor, the rod's are still fine, so I dont know how some one can manage to throw a rod with a stock one.

The 2.0's are known for dropping valve seats under high rpm's...take the head off and have it rebuilt. Timing belt is notorious for "jumping" time if it is worn as well. Flywheel has nothing to do with alternator. I have 200K on my '97 Escort and its running great.

I also have a 97 and like vikingwick said.. my valve guide broke apart and made lots of noise and as it broke up, it started to jamb my valves open in all the cyls.. I pulled my head and it detroyed the #1 piston and did damage to all the others..

Hello, I am new to this forum

Wow!! you have up the ponies on yours? . I have a 97 escort with the 2.0 sohc. I have been searching web sites for mods for my plain old 2.0 spi with no success. All of them are geared to the focus/and or escort zx2 which has the zetec engine. The one good thing about it is it is paid for and thats about the only good thing.Do you know where I could get parts like throttle bodies,MAF,cold air systems, pistons etc, if not can parts on the zetec be placed on the 2.0 spi sohc?

Any help is appreciated
