Lookin' At A Bimmer

Hey what's up. I'm new to AF and hopefully you guys (being the car experts that you are) can help me decide on a car decision. Alright here's the 411. I need to get rid of the Buick. It's slow, a gas hog, old and the list goes on and on. I have been looking at some Iroc Z28's and some bmw 3 series cars and 5 series cars. I have about 6k to spend and i want a car that has some class and be able to kick ass. Also modability is a factor. Anyways, all input is appreciated. See ya in the forums. Peace....

Re: Lookin' At A Bimmer

You have 6K, don't buy the Iroc. I've heard that electrical problems are pretty common in them. As for a BMW, what year are you hoping to get into? If anything, invest your money into some sort of Import. Like a 300ZX, 240SX, or something to that affect. That's just my personal opinion, I'm sure you'll have plenty more from everyone in here. Good luck. Late...

Re: Lookin' At A Bimmer

i'm hoping for mid 1990's...i saw some on ebay that were selling for $4500 but those were only like 318i's, i'd like to get a 328is or 5 series...are they different at all, like with horsepower numbers and performance?

Are you talking about the Bimmers? I don't have too much knowledge of them. But, can you get the link to the bimmer that you are looking at on ebay? Just wanna check out what you are looking at. Late...

Re: Lookin' At A Bimmer

if you want speed and high gas mileage and only have 6,000.00 to spend get a sport bike.. if you know how to ride that is..atleast they get like 28 - 40 mpg and will surely pretty much beat anything on the street.. although then it's really no comparison unless a drag car or another bike pulls upto you.. but hey it's speed and gas mileage and they're cheap i can find you a hayabusa for pretty cheap

Re: Lookin' At A Bimmer

For 6k, your gonna be hard pressed to find a Bimmer. Even most used ones are kinda high, and I dont trust ebay as far as I can throw it (being that it is a web site, not a physicall thing, therefore cant throw, thats not to far). However, yes, there are differences between hp figures and such. For example, a 318 is a 3 serries with a 1.8 liter engine. 328 is a 3 serries with a 2.8 liter. I'd go for the Bimmer any day (thanks for using the right name, by the way), but again, you'll be hard pressed with only 6k.

Re: Lookin' At A Bimmer

You could easily get an old e30 bimmer in good shape for that kind of money. Or go for an e28 if you like the 5 series better. That is if your set on having a bimmer, your money might be better spent elsewhere if your looking for performance.

Re: Lookin' At A Bimmer

E30s are great cars. If you can find a decent condition E30 for your price range, I'd go for that.

Get a 5.0! I had no big problems in mine... besides that one time the altenator went out as I was passing compton....

And gas hog? I was able to get a best of 21 point something miles per gallon, while I've only been able to get a tad over 23mpg with my m3. And both are with a good amount of highway cruising and good ol' throttle stompin'.

Don't go get yourself a money pit by spending 6g's on a bimmer. Soooo many little electrical problems and little things falling apart. And not enough speed.

5.0 man!!!

I'd go with a 91-94 VR4 with like 130,000 on it. I've seen more than one around that mileage sell for around $5,000-$7,000.

Otherwise, go for a 300ZXTT. Good cars.

If you can find a good E30 for $6,000, jump all over that.

That's what I would do.

Re: Lookin' At A Bimmer

For 6k your not going to get a good VR4 or 300ZXT.

You can find early 325i bimmers for $4,XXX its not to hard around here. However a 328i is going to cost you. I would really think about a E30 325i between the years 89-91. They run like mid to high 15s in the 1/4 mile. You can get a nice one for around $3,xxx or one that needs a little work for less. Then with the other 3k you can make it REALLY fast. They turbo well and it dosnt take a lot of hp to get them fast. The best example I can think of right now is a guy on E30tech.com that ran a 12.1 on street tires with 270whp. I wouldnt call them money pits BUT if your broke a bimmer might not be the car for you. When you first pick up these older E30 there tends to be a lot of little things you got to fix.
