How is the turbo shaft play (radially and thrust)?

Re: white smoke coming out the exhaust and oil pressure reading low

Remove the intake pipe so you can see the compressor wheel. Grab that bastard (make sure its not too hot) and wiggle around. Push it in an out. There will be some small amount of noticeable play. But it should be small. If its excessive (more than 1/16th of an inch for example), you could be pushing oil by the turbo oil seals. When you get a LOT of smoke its almost always the turbo. Valve seals can burn a quart a week and not smoke, in my experience.

Re: white smoke coming out the exhaust and oil pressure reading low

I would have been hoping it was the turbo, the other causes are harder to fix for the average DSMer. Which of the other two causes it is, anyones guess. Try a leakdown test and see if that leads to anything. Since you need to pull the head to do either one, you might as well fix both things. Get the head inspected and rebuilt, and you obviously have no choice but to use a new gasket. If it still smokes after that, good luck to you.
