Help opening the distributor cap

Hi! I wanted to open my distributor cap to have a look at it and the rotor (I have a 97 Civic DX). But looking from the front of the car, the cap opens to the left and there is this black box below the air intake. It does not leave any space for me to get my screw driver to take off the screws on the distributor cap. Can you tell me what that box is? It has 2 holes on the top and the air intake pipe has two small tubes passing into it. Is it safe to take this thing off?

Re: Help opening the distributor cap

If you don't have room, just remove the stock air box and arm, that should give you room to get to the cap, then use a 8mm wrench not a screw driver to take off the cap, you might strip to screw.

yes, you need to remove the resonator (air box) in order to get at the distributor cap. there are two 10mm bolts- one on top of the strut housing, the other behind the headlamp assembly. there may also be a plastic piece that is mounted to one of the radiator rubber bushing mounts- just pull on the air box, and it should come off.

a note of caution- be VERY careful when screwing the distributer cap bolts back in. don't use a ratchet, use a hand-nutdriver or just the socket with an extension to thread them in. i crossthreaded and broke the head off of one side on mine, and now i've only got one bolt holding it on. :/
