Question cracked exhaust manifold

howdy all, new taco owner here, got a 96 ext cab / 4X4 with the 2.7 eng, exhaust manifolds cracked between the #3 & #4 cylinder, is this a common problem? and what's the cost of a good aftermarket header, and will the header be a "bolt-on" installation?

many thanks

Re: cracked exhaust manifold

yes, its a common thing. Cost is between 260.00 and 340.00 depending on coating. Most tacoma owners from what I've read our running lcengineering.com, downeyoff-road.com, or northwestoffroad.com. I believe the northwest is the only one not ca smog legal. They are located in washingtion state. Don't know if that applies to you. I went with lc engineering. They are usually bolt on applications.

headers on 96 toyota tacomas

i just put a set of pacesetter headers on my 96 tacoma 2.7 4x4, they work great all except now i show a check engine light, po171 code, which is excessivley lean. I"ve had it in the shop for the problem, they clear it, and it comes right back. The engine runs fine, but to have a trouble code showing all the time is annoying to say the least! I e-mailed pacesetter and asked if that was a normal consequence or I'm just unlucky, They never responded! If anybody has a cure for this, I would really like to know what it is!

Re: cracked exhaust manifold

1. Check for improper air induction. Loose oil dipstick, loose oil filler cap, loose pcv hose. Cracks in air induction system between throttle body and cylinder head.

2. Check injector output. Clean

3. Check MAF meter and engine coolant termperature sensor.

4. Check spark and ignition system.

5. Check fuel pressure and flow. Fuel pump, fuel filter, pressure regulator.

6. Check for exhaust gas leak before A/F ratio (HO2) sensors.

7. Check output voltage of A/F ratio (HO2) sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1).

8. Check for open or short in harness between ECM and A/F ratio (HO2) sensor.

Yeah, Downey headers are pretty good.

bearcat,
I've got the same problem on my 97' 2.7, an exhaust manifold leak; though I have'nt isolated it to exactly where. I also have an engine light. The shop that helped me with my right front shock swapout(I gave up after doing the left side) said it was the manifold leak triggering the O2 sensor.

My 98 2.7 cracked right in the middle. I went with the downey ceramic coated header. it was about $300. I wouldn't say it was the easiest thing to install. the downpipe was bent wrong so i had to disconnect all my exhaust hangers to get it to line up right. the emmision tube has a flared flange on it while the tube on the truck has a flat mounting surface. all i did was mate them up to eachother, put the bolts through and tighten them down until the flange on the header bent over the flare. so far no problems. i would definatley recommend an aftermarket exhaust at the time you do this. my truck has the flange style o2 sensors. whatever you do, don't buy the flanges from downey. all you have to do is buy a set of Bosch replacement sensors and unscrew the flange off of them. then the exhaust shop can weld on a standard screw in bung. i got mine for $125 ea from napa

Is there any dissadvantage to replacing the manifold with a stock replacement? I have'nt priced the part from Toyota, but Napa should have it, right?

Re: cracked exhaust manifold

If i remeber correctly i don't think napa had it. come to think of it, i don't think napa sells any replacement manifolds, but they may. I think toyota was going to charge me between $250-300 for a replacement. i don't think there is any disadvantage to putting a stock one back on, but every time i open my hood and see that shiny header below my K&N intake, it puts a smile on my face.
