Four Wheel Drive 95 Suburban

I have a 95 1500 Suburban 5.7L. One night I parked it and left it in 4WD. The next day I didn't need 4WD, so I put the trans in neutral and tried to put it back in 2WD (has selector stick on floor). The stick would not move out of 4WD. It worked fine the day before. The truck is actually in 4WD also, so I know mechanically it works, just can't take it out of 4WD. I was thinking it might be the actuator, but if that was the case, I should be able to move the selector stick and I don't think 4WD would still be engaged. Also, I live in Alaska:temp was in the lower 20's if that could have an effect on the problem. Please Help. Joe

Have you tried checking the linkage on the transfer case to see if there is any build up (mud, ice, snow, ect..) that might cause it not shift?

Re: Four Wheel Drive 95 Suburban

you said you put tranny in nuetral and tried putting it back into 2WD, not sure if it would matter, but did you try switching to 2WD with tranyy in park? Also, maybe there is a brake sensor, essentially a sensor that will not allow any change until brake pedal in pressed.

Re: Four Wheel Drive 95 Suburban

try backing up 20 feet or so... sometimes the internal parts get so much force on them you can't get it out. Backing up will help if that is the case.

Re: Four Wheel Drive 95 Suburban

From what I heard the actuator is thermal and it may be an indication that it is starting to fail. They are know to fail in extreme temps and when getting wet alot, There is a bolt in mechanical replacement out there that is cable actuated
