Hi, recently i got in an accident with my 1988 Volvo 760 GLE. Nothing too major, 2 flat tires, busted lights, etc. The car still runs fine, the only problem is that if i were to fix it, I'd have to replace the airbag that deployed, and I don't have that kind of money right now. So basically I'm trying to sell the car for parts, scrap metal and such. Being as I've never sold parts or scrap metal before, I'm not too sure on how to go about doing this. Where would I take my car, and what would a reasonable price be for the parts and metal? I just don't want to get ripped off or anything you know. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The airbag deployed and the insurance company didn't total the car? Thats unusual. Parting out the car can be time consuming, but you can turn the biggest margin out of it. I doubt you'll get more then a few bucks as selling the rest as scrap though. Stop in the volvo forms and keep an eye on people asking for parts.

Re: Question about selling my car...
Thats a good point. The insurance company would either fix it or, if totalled, give you money and take the car.
But, if the crash was your fault (it sounds like you went off the road at speed (?) and you don't want to make a claim, then you can just look up auto recyclers/ scrap yards in the phone book and have them take it away. You would sign over the ownership to them, and essentially you have sold them the car. They can tow it away for you. However, you would only get $50-200 for it. You could try putting a classified ad in the local paper. Most places have a specialised classified newspaper where people can advertise stuff free. Look around for one, It should have dozens or hundreds of classisfied ads for car parts, cars etc. Then just advertise it for sale either whole or for parts. I suggest start at $750 for tyhe entire car, or parts for $5 and up. The engine/trans can be at least a couple hundred each, tail lights and windows $25 each etc. Doors, hood, trunk lid, fenders, steering column $50-100 each. Check out other classified ads and get a feel for what the going rates are. Make it clear in the ad that the parts buyer is responsible for removing the parts themselves. Then, once the Volvo carcass is picked clean, call the auto recycler to tow it away. They will likely still give you the same $50 to $200. |

Thanks for the advice. The reason the insurance didn't pick it up was because first, I don't have collision on the car (wasn't worth it, for what I bought it for), and second, I don't want to have the accident on my record considering im only 17, I don't want that following me around in the future.
