reverse problem

almost every time i try to put my car in reverse it doesnt want to go at first.
i have a manual 98 civic EX (d16y8), its all stock,w/ 105,000 miles on it

i push the clutch in all the way but it seems like i still have to pop it in. but that is tipical i assume because of the "lock" on it. it keeps you from shifting into reverse on accident when you driving down the road.

so any way
with the clutch presed in all the way and it popped in reverse some times it doesnt engage all the way( i think) and it sounds like a few of the gears grinde.
any idea on what it is
all my other gears seem to be fine

Re: reverse problem

have you tried double clutching then putting it in reverse? I had to do that with my friend's car everytime if I wanted it to go in smooth. If you're hearing grinding in other gears you might have bad synchros. Have you checked your gear oil?

Re: reverse problem

i have an 00 EX civic 60k miles
same deal with reverse...i push it almost all the way into reverse, but it wont fully get into R until i let the clutch out all the way to the friction zone, then it pops right into R, and i can move, but its a pain in the ass and I've ground into reverse a few more times than i'd like...

my 97 GSR with 78,000 miles on it also does it. When I first got it I couldnt pop it into reverse too well. Sometomes I'd think I'd have it in the reverse gear, then give it a little gas, then slowly let out the clutch, then *GRIIIIIIIIND*. I've done this in my friend's 92 jetta, 94 Geo metro AND 1989 4Runner (the grinding cuz I THOUGHT I was in the reverse gear). I just play with the stick nicely.

I also use this method. If it does not go into reverse right away, I just put it into first and maybe move the car a inch or two, and then put it into reverse. No big deal. If your on a hill, you can also let it roll backwards a little bit and then it should go right in.
