Pictures thread posting guidelines.

Just some tips to make sure everyone can enjoy your photos.


1- Make sure they conform with the AF user guidelines. i.e. No nudity etc.

2- Make sure they are in a size everyone can appreciate.
Modern Digital cameras are capable of taking pictures so large they are simply not viewable on a computer screen.
Please resize all pictures so the longest edge is no bigger than 800 pixels long.

3- Not everyone has a High speed conection. The majority of the worlds internet users still use dial up. If your thread contains more than 3 photos, or you have saved your photos with very low compresion and they are bigger than around 150k then please supply a warning for 56k/dail up users in the thread title.

4- All pictures should be in JPEG aka sRGB format. Larger sized animated .gifs should be have a warning in the thread title, and .bmps should be avoided, or converted to JPEG.

5- If you have photoshop, or similar, run an Unsharp Mask Filter over your pictures after you have resized them. This will sharpen most of the detail that is disrupted after the resizing process.

6- Don't get upset if someone critiques your photos, or dosnt like them.
If someone says something offensive then report it to a mod, but take any critizisim as a chance to learn and improve your photography.

7- Don't make offensive comments. If you don't like something, or see fault in someones work then explain why. If you can't explain why then don't post.

8- Positive comments are always welcome.
But remember forum rules on post whoring apply here as much as they do anywhere else.

are you talking about the images that you see in the actual post, the images that we link to or both?
sometimes I put a thumbnail in the post with a link to the full image if the viewer wants to check out the full photo. is this a no no?

It depends if you want people to be able to see the whole photo or not.

800pixels will fit on 90% of the monitors and screen resolutions that people use, and allow room for things like the forums post around the edges, and the constraints of window size etc.

Personaly I won't comment on an image I can't see all in one go, its simply not possible to judge a photo you have to scroll across to view.

so for the rules we are talking about in the post itself?

Basicly I'd like to conform with the rules, provide a thumbnail of my photo (usually 200x150) and provide an offsite link back to the fullsize image. Just unsure if linking back to the full thing is okay by the rules, or if I have to go and re-resize all of my pics i want to post?

You can provide an off site link to an image as large or as small as you like.

But if its bigger than the average screen resolution (which is still only 1024x768) then don't be surprised if few people comment on it, or complain its heavily pixelated because thier browser has resized it.

You can show a 4MP image in your posts if you like, the 800pixel idea is just a recomendation, not a forum rule.
