Filling up the Tank
I have a 2002 Blazer 4dr 4WD.
There is no problem with the vehicle - runs like a Top.. But I have a question that I am curious about. When I fillup at the gas station, and nozzle clicks off, my tank is full - I mean FULL... If the pump stops at $20 and I try to put in $20.10 gas will be pouring out the top of the filler neck.. (even at these high prices!!) Other vehicles I have (Chevy S10 and Caddy) can take another buck or two if I try to fill it to the brim.. Wassup with that? Is it just the tank design? Once again - I have no problems with the vehicle - no gas leaks, no fumes, Nada.. just curious if others have the same setup.. |

********************************** 2nd question: for the last year, I basically use the Blazer for trips for upstate NY State Trips (I use my S10 4 banger for work 80 miles RT/day). On the highway I average 21-22 mpg if I set the cruise at 65 (most of my driving in this vehicle is highway). Naturally, if I set the cruise at 75 the mpg is reduced - normally I am not in a hurry so most of the time I am cruising at 65. Snow - my cabin is located on the SE shore of Lake Ontario, which is famous for is Lake Effect White Outs and the area averages 200" per year. I have on several occaisions arrived at Camp and have punched that Blazer into snow to the top of the wheel wells. I have to back up and start over when I feel the snow pack under the frame rails start pushing back b4 the wheels come off the ground, and on a couple of occasions I have hung it up, but what the heck, I am right next to the cabin by then and I simple grab a shovel and do a little digging. ![]() I run Uniroyal Laredo Cross Country Tires on it... IMO, it is great in the snow and anything 2 feet and under is a cakewalk.. I am extremely pleased with the Blazer. The reason I bought an S-10 is that the cab is identical to the Blazer - all the buttons & knobs are in the same places... Hope this helps.. Later Guys. |

Re: Filling up the Tank
It's not a good idea to fill the tank to the brim, especially in the summer. The reason is that the fuel comes out of the tanks in the ground at approximately 50 degrees, once it's in your tank and rises above 50 degrees, the fuel will expand. At first it sounds great, more fuel, same price. That part is true, however, once the fuel has expanded beyond what the tank can handle, it has but one place to go, and that’s into the evaporative emission charcoal canister. The problem with that is the canister is not designed to handle liquid fuel and once it has been subjected to it, the canister needs to be replaced. On the top of the fuel tank, there is an area designed to accommodate fuel expansion, to a certain extent. The highest point in the tank is where the line that leads to the canister connects to. If you have ever had your fuel pump out, there are 3 lines that connect to it: Pressurized fuel for the injectors, return of unused fuel from the injectors, and canister purge. So, when the pump clicks off, stop.

It states in the owner's manual (and my '97 Blazer manual states the same) not to fill it beyond the first click-off, and that is the case. Perhaps the closed-loop recirc systems on the newer cars/trucks have something to do with this. I'm not a fluid dynamics specialist, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn once.

Re: Filling up the Tank
I have an 02 4dr 4x4 Blazer 4.3 W with the spare tire mounted underneath, and as far as I know It has an 18 gal tank. When I fill up It takes 12 gallons because the low fuel light comes on when there is still 5 gallons in the tank. This is to protect the fuel pump from overheating and burning out. I have added several extras, push bar, tow hitch, studded snow tires and most of my driving is at 70 mph so my mileage isn't that great. After changing to a cold air intake, less restrictive exaust, full tune (cap, rotor, plugs, wires, PCV valve, fuel injection cleaner, air and fuel filters and cleaning the MAF, I still only get about 16 mpg highway.

I thought all the Blazers had 19 gallon tanks?
If you use regular gasoline you can maybe get 9-10 gallons for 20.10.
Depends what area of the eastcoast your from Price of Gasoline is $2.19 cents regular right now in New Jersey,, I remember when I purchased my brand new 1996 2dDR LS Blazer 4x4 the price of gasoline was 86-88 cents a gallon.. The Summer of 2005 was the worst with gasoline at $3.50 a gallon.. We still haven't recovered since then. |
