89 jeep cherokee won't start of course

hi,
I've read through the forum a couple times before signing up..
we have a 89 jeep cherokee 4 cyl. 4X4
the thing will turn over all night long and not start,
we checked the forum things, unplugged the { tdc censour?}
by the dist. plugged it back in that didn't work,
un hooked the battery, rehooked it up,
that didn't work
we got no spark anywhere, so we replaced the coil...
still no start...
is that tdc censor located just below the dist cap called something else,
the people at o'rielly's never heard of such a thing???

any help would be great....

THANKS!!
Morinanna

You might be looking for the Crank position sensor. Not sure though if the 89 Xj had one. If you have no spark, get a Chilton's manual covering this vehicle, look over the ignition section. How did you test for spark? is this carb or fuel inj.? Are you getting fuel?

OK it's fuel inject..
we checked for spark by unplugged the plug to the cyl. and put a screw driver in it, and held it to the block, then turn the key ...
got no spark coming from the coil...

don't know how to test if we are getting fuel or not,
we started with seeing if we have spark and found out we have no spark,

HI, THE THING UNDER THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP IS THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. IF YOU HAVE NO SPARK WHILE CRANKING AT THE PLUGS OR AT THE COIL WIRE YOU PROBABLY HAVE A BAD CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. ITS LOCATED ON THE BELLHOUSING, PLUGGING AND UNPLUGGING ONLY WORKS IF IT HAS DIRTY CONNECTIONS IT IS NO TEST. DALE [email protected]

the starter relay on the fender might be the culprit. i've put two in my 87 (offroader) and one in my 90. its right next to the bank of relays on the passenger side inner fender well.

Re: 89 jeep cherokee won't start of course

i have found the cam sensor in the distributor to be the problem, the ground wire breaks in the rubber plug thru the dist body. happened twice in 200,000 miles. also clean the coil pac slide terminals they corrode. good luck

Re: 89 jeep cherokee won't start of course

HI, I am having sort of the same problem but I am not getting any spark or fuel, with the key in the on position I used to be able to wait a few minutes and the fuel pump relay would start clicking progresively getting louder and then the fuel pump would send fuel and then I would be able to get it started after 8 to 10 cranks. I replaced the CPS and that didnt do anything. Any suggestions?
thanks, Joe

I would start by checking the main relays on the fender, i havent worked on any 92 models but this sounds like a power feed problem. check fusible links and all battery related connections, grounds etc, also on stick cars when the clutch master goes bad it can leak fluid on the fuse box, causing some power problems, nice design!!
good luck ,Russ
